Advancing Afghan Trade is an initiative by the European Union and the International Trade Centre (ITC), launched on 29 November 2016 as “Afghanistan: Trade for Economic Growth & Regional Cooperation” (ATEG). This project aims to lay the foundation for strengthening the country’s trade capacities and building a business-friendly environment, with a long-term goal of helping to transform Afghanistan and its regional partners into a vibrant regional economic hub.
Funded by the European Union, the project uses trade as a lever for economic growth by facilitating job creation, poverty reduction and enhanced regional cooperation.
The initiative aims to further increase Afghanistan’s ties to the global economy, following the country’s accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2016. The three-year plan (2016 – 2019) is implemented by ITC in close collaboration with the Ministry of Commerce and Industries. In specific, the project is tasked with the following four outputs, which will ultimately allow Afghan enterprises to be better equipped to compete in regional and global markets.
